Here is why…
At age 14, I was a high-achieving teenager involved in theatre, cheer, student leadership, and every academic challenge available. And I loved it.
I took every career assessment test my university offered. After a tour into and out a PhD program in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, I found myself having accidentally started my own boutique consulting business. I quickly rose to the top 1% of income earners, managed a bundle of clients and engagements that I loved, and was so stressed and without sleep, I had clients asking about my personal well-being.
I had nailed the 3-fold magic formula for work success:
1) client results I cared about,
2) enjoyment of the work itself, and
3) tripling revenues.
This theme of high achievement without sustainability way runs strong. Fast forward to recent times. My husband and partner, Frank, and I have two funny, wise, wise-cracking, and handsome sons. (They have a lot in common with their dad).
I had just returned home from a 2-day workshop and I was buzzing from the high of happy clients, big results, and fun work. My 2 sons must have sensed my good mood as a time to get real with me.
I was standing in the kitchen with both of them. I don’t remember which one spoke or the exact words they said, but it was something like this…
“We know you're successful, and you say you love your work, BUT…”
Here I was thinking about them creating abundant work lives and all they could say was,
I was a deflated balloon.
I knew that I needed to make big changes, but I wasn’t sure where to start. I needed to do it for my kids. How could I expect them to do something I couldn’t do myself? And probably more important than that, I needed to make changes for myself. Or else I wasn’t going to be a help to anyone in the long run.
I will spare you the details of the year from hell. Some might call that year a Breakdown. And in some ways, it was. It was a breakdown of the old ways of doing things - ways that had served me well. But ways that had their own limits. I now look at that year as The Awakening. Waking up to what is most important and refusing to settle for less - no matter how scary things get. And so, as you might imagine, I do my work from a deeper place now. I am not yet fully transformed. I am a work in progress. And yet, I have very personal reasons for doing this work. I do it for me, for my teenage boys who are becoming young men in the world, for my husband, my family, my friends, my clients, and for the greater ripple effect to the world.
If I understand anything, it’s that I understand what it’s like to be extremely “successful” on the outside and internally miserable on the inside. To let the stress of achievement rob you of the very joy and life you are trying to create.
I also know from personal experience that you can be trying as hard as you know how to serve your biggest stakeholders and also be blind to things that you're doing that are sabotaging your effectiveness as a leader.
